The Journey Planner is a journey planning service provided by YTV Transport to the users of the Helsinki metropolitan area (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa) public transport. The service covers also the town of Kerava. The municipality of Kirkkonummi will be included in the Journey Planner during fall 2008. The Journey Planner gives you the route from place A to place B at a given time. If you want to check the route of a specific bus service, you can use the Line Search.
The Journey Planner allows you to search for public transport connections between selected locations. The service covers all modes of transport in the Helsinki metropolitan area: buses, metro, trams, commuter trains and the Suomenlinna ferry. The Journey Planner provides you with a door-to-door connection, i.e. walking distances are included as well.
The Journey Planner’s search results are TIME-SPECIFIC. The Journey Planner uses estimated arrival times at bus stops and automatically takes into account transfers from one vehicle to another. You only need to enter your place of departure and destination together with desired departure or arrival time and the Journey Planner will provide you the best connections at the given time.
Please note that the route suggestions are based on estimated travel times and the suggested connection may fail due to poor weather and traffic conditions or another disturbance affecting public transport operation. YTV is not liable for any possible damages arising from a failed connection.
You can save your own routes and places of interest for later use.
The use of the service is provided free of charge.
First select your place of departure and then your destination by one the following ways:
a) Type the street address, name of the stop or place in the text field. E.g. Kuusitie 3, or Railway Station. Please type at least the first three letters of the search word. If there are multiple results matching your search, select the desired location from the pull-down menu. If you select or type a street name without a house number, the service will request for the number separately. Please note that you can also type in the full address (esim. Kuusitie 3, Vantaa).
b) Clicking the arrow to the right of the ‘From’ and ‘To’ fields will open a menu. Click ‘Search map’ to access a map search where you can select your place of departure or destination on the map. The street address closest to the location you clicked on the map will be used as input. You can scroll and zoom the map as you like and search for the desired address by clicking the map. The selected address is shown at the bottom left-hand side of the map. To add the selected address to the From/To field, click ‘Add to search field’.
c) Clicking the arrow to the right of the From/To fields will open a menu from which you can choose ‘Search directory’ to access a directory from which you can search for the desired location using the lists of street names, stops and places. To add the selected street, place or stop name to the From/To field, click it.
d) If you have saved your own locations in the service, you can select them directly from the menu on the right hand side of the From/To fields under ´My locations´.
e) The Journey Planner uses the current date as default. You can also select any desired date for which you want to find a connection by clicking the date on the calendar. The calendar shows the days for which timetables are available.
f) The Journey Planner uses the current time as the default. You can also enter the desired time for which you want to find a connection. The input format for the time is hh:mm. If you are searching connections for journeys past midnight, make sure you set the date accordingly in order to get the route suggestions for the desired date and time.
g) You can choose to either leave at or arrive by the time you specify. Departure time is the default.
When you have selected the place of departure, destination, date and time, start the search by clicking on SEARH.
The Journey Planner first shows a summary of suggested routes. If the suggested routes are not suitable for you, you can change the search criteria here. The route summary shows key information on the suggested routes, such as travel time, transport modes used and walking distances. To view a more detailed description of a route, click the suggested route in question. A more detailed description of the selected route with maps showing transfers will appear below the route summary. You can change the time by clicking the Earlier/Later links.
The detailed route description shows itemized information needed for making the journey. You can view the route on a map by following the links provided in the route description. There are also links to the timetables of the bus services to be used and to stop-specific timetables of the stops along the route. The description also contains a detailed list of stops passed on each route together with estimated at-stop times.
To access the advanced search, click on ‘Advanced search’ on the search screen. The advanced search allows you to use more detailed search criteria and to add an additional stop (called via point) to your route. You can also save the settings you have created. Please note that if you save the settings used in the advanced search, the saved settings will be used also in the basic search mode.
In the advanced search you can adjust the following search parameters:
In the advanced search you can set a via point between your place of departure and destination. The Journey Planner will first calculate the journey from the place of departure to the via point and then to your final destination. You can either type the name/address of the via point in the text field or select the via point either from map, alphabetical directory or a list of your saved locations using the menu opened by clicking the arrow on the right hand side of the input field.
You can type the time (minutes) spent at the via point in the ‘Time’ field. The journey will continue from the via point to the destination at earliest from the moment the selected amount of time has passed from the arrival at the via point.
Transfer margin refers to the time needed to transfer from one vehicle to another. The default margin is 3 minutes. This means that if the estimated arrival time at a specific stop is at 8.30, the vehicle to which you are supposed to transfer, must not pass the stop in question before 8.33. If you reduce the margin, you may find a faster transport connection but at the same time, you increase the risk of the connection not working out in practice. A fixed transfer margin has been set for certain feeder connections. The fixed transfer margin will not be affected by the changes you make.
You can set the walking speed at any of the following five levels: slow 30 metres per minute, default 70 meters per minute, fast 100 metres per minute, running 200 metres per minute, or cycling 300 metres per minute. The default speed is 70 meters per minute, which is the walking speed in urban conditions commonly used in transport planning.
You can select the route type from the following four alternatives: default, fastest, least transfers and least walking. The default is a neutral route type aiming at finding a fast connection with reasonable walking distance and number of transfers. The fastest route type aims at arriving at the destination as early as possible or leaving the starting point as late as possible depending on whether you have set a departure or arrival time. I.e. it is the fastest route at the given time (not absolutely fastest route). On long journeys, selecting this route type usually increases the number of transfers. If you select ‘Least transfers’ as your route type, the number of transfers will be minimized, whereas choosing ‘Least walking' will minimize the total walking distance.
By default, the Journey Planner shows five route suggestions, but you can also choose to view one or three route suggestions at a time.
By default, the Journey Planner uses all transport modes included in the system. You can exclude transport modes from the search by unchecking the appropriate box. You can also select ‘Walking only’, in which case public transport modes will be excluded. Route suggestions for walking only are not necessarily optimal routes for walking and cycling but they do help in determining the walking distances.
You can save your own settings for later use by clicking ‘Save settings’. The saved settings will be shown at the bottom of the front page together with a link for restoring the default settings.
If you want to print out a route suggestion to take with you, you can use a separate printing function to tailor the itinerary to suit your needs. To start printing, click the 'Print view' link in the top bar of the detailed route description. All route suggestions will open into a new window. By using the + and – buttons on the left hand side of the print view you can select route suggestions you want to print or hide unnecessary suggestions to avoid extra pages. In addition, by using the + and – buttons of individual route suggestions you can compress the stop lists of the route suggestion and hide maps showing transfer points when deemed unnecessary. When you are content with the printing settings, you can start printing by clicking ‘Print’ at the top of the page or by pressing Ctl + P.
You can save your own routes and stops for later use. Your saved routes and locations are provided as shortcuts in the menus next to the input fields and on the front page. To edit the saved information, click the arrows under 'My locations' or 'My routes' to open a menu. You can e.g. rename the locations/routes, delete individual locations/routes and search return routes for saved routes.
When you have typed in an address or selected a location from the directory, you can save the location by clicking the disc icon
next to the From/To field.
When the search has been successfully completed, you can save the route by clicking the ‘Save route’ button next to the ‘Search’ button. Saved routes and locations can be accessed directly from the front page. When you save your own routes, only the place of departure and destination will be saved. I.e. when you use the saved route later on, the date and time will be adapted accordingly.
In order to save your own locations and routes you need to have cookies enabled in your browser. Please note that removing the cookies from your computer will also remove the saved routes, locations and settings.
The Journey Planner contains an integrated map service which allows the following functions:
The maps can be viewed on seven different scale levels. A red arrow indicates the centre point of the map as well as the selected address. You can re-center the map by clicking on it, and you can scroll the map by using the arrows around the edges of the map. With the (+) and (-) buttons on top of the map you can change the scale of the map. The scale of the map can be changed also by clicking the scale bar above the map. With the map search you can search street names, places or stops. If there are multiple results matching the text search, the results will be listed to the left of the map. By clicking one of them, the map will focus on the selected location. To add the selected location to the From/To field, click the ‘Add to search field’ button at the bottom left.
You can also send route instructions to an e-mail address in text format. You can send the selected route suggestion to an e-mail address with the 'Send e-mail' link in the top bar of the route description. When you click the link, a form will open into which you can type in the e-mail addresses of the sender and recipient. The route suggestion is printed in the text field of the form in text format. You can also add your own comments in the text field to be enclosed in the message. To prevent spam, sending of an e-mail is confirmed with image verification (captcha), i.e. you need to type the words you see in the image in the box below. Type the words separately and remember that the captcha is case-sensitive. Because of spambots equipped with OCR (optical character recognition), the words in the image are often stretched and styled in order to make it impossible for the programs to recognize them. If for this reason you find it impossible to read the words, you can change the image by clicking 'New image'. When you have typed in the information needed, send the e-mail by clicking ‘Send’.
You can also check up an environmentally friendly route alternative for the route you searched for by using the
link to the Journey Planner for Cycling. The route will be calculated on the basis of the same From/Via/To points you used in the original search.
